Fort Worth City Leader Wants to Lower Speed Limit in Neighborhoods

A Fort Worth city council member is pushing to lower the speed limit on residential streets from 30 miles-per-hour to 25 miles-per-hour.

Ann Zadeh said she is concerned about children and bicyclists.

“I’m all about trying to make the places where people live as safe as possible,” she said.

The speed limit on residential streets is set by state law at 30 mph.

Cities may lower the limit, but are required to post signs with the lower number.

Zadeh wants to change the law statewide, partly so Fort Worth won't have to put up signs everywhere.

If she's not successful convincing lawmakers in Austin, she says she's confident she can get her fellow council members to go along in Fort Worth.

The state legislature meets again in January.

The speed limit issue came up in the last session two years ago, but never made it out of a committee.
