A former Texas A&M University at Galveston history and English professor must serve eight years in prison in a child pornography case.
Matthew Kirk Irwin was sentenced Thursday by a federal judge in Galveston. The 47-year-old educator in March pleaded guilty to receipt and possession of child pornography.
Investigators say Irwin drew the attention of law officers by accessing files from a website known to contain child porn. A 2015 search of Irwin's home turned up electronic devices with more than 4,000 images and videos of child pornography.
Irwin was an assistant professor of liberal arts for Texas A&M-Galveston when he was arrested. Irwin was fired in December.
