Former Inmate Dies Days After Hanging Himself in Austin Jail

A former inmate has died after officials say he hung himself at the Travis County Jail and was found unresponsive.

The Travis County sheriff's office says 21-year-old Elijah Ashbey was found unconscious in his cell on Nov. 10. He had been booked into the jail two days prior.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that Ashbey remained in the hospital until he was pronounced dead Sunday.

A preliminary investigation from the Travis County medical examiner's office shows Ashbey died of asphyxiation after using items in his cell to create a rope. An autopsy into his death is ongoing.

The sheriff's office is calling Ashbey a former inmate because a warrant for his arrest was withdrawn while he was alive and in treatment at a local hospital.
