Former Beaumont School Official Faces Fraud Charges

Federal prosecutors say $750,000 was embezzled

A former Beaumont assistant superintendent has been indicted on charges that she embezzled more than $750,000 from the school district.

Federal prosecutors announced Wednesday that 60-year-old Patricia Lambert was one of two people named in the indictment, which contends that she also conspired to falsify test scores.

Lambert is facing charges that include four counts of fraud.

Prosecutors say that in Lambert's earlier position as principal of a magnet school, she took control of the booster club and diverted funds into a personal account. The club was not subject to the district's auditing. They say she also inflated some student fees to enrich herself.

The district has been hit by a rash of corruption cases. The Texas Education Agency last year took over the district, which has nearly 21,000 students.
