Flooding Affects Many North Texas Golf Courses

Golfers now have a new water hazard to avoid: flooded fairways on many North Texas courses.

"It's been a little frustrating to find places to golf," said Seth Bigelow, of Keller. "But you just got to keep calling, keep working at it and eventually you find somewhere that it's not too wet to play."

All three of the nine-hole courses at Grapevine Golf Course are under water, with one and possibly two of the bridges that connect them washed out by the rushing flood waters from the nearby Lake Grapevine spillway.

"Until the water gets off the golf course and the spillway, we're pretty much dead in the water, so to speak," said Russell Pulley, director of golf at Grapevine Golf Course.

The city-run golf course is losing thousands of dollars each day and has had to cancel golf outings through July.

"We're one of the busiest golf courses in the area, so it's just hemorrhaging," said Pulley.

Marinas and recreation areas around North Texas lakes are also losing money.

Many of them are closed indefinitely, with the Fourth of July weekend less than two weeks away.

"You need to call ahead and make sure the recreation area that you're seeking to go to is open," said James Murphy, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The following North Texas golf courses are currently closed by high water:

  • Cowboys Golf Club, Grapevine
  • Grapevine Golf Course, Grapevine
  • Indian Creek Golf Club, Carrollton
  • Luna Vista Golf Course, Dallas
  • Riverchase Golf Club, Coppell
  • Riverside Golf Club, Grand Prairie
