Flapping Jacks for Charity

IHOP, Shriners team for National Pancake Day fundraiser

March brings with it Mardi Gras, the Ides, St. Patrick’s Day, Potty Dance Day [not sure what that means], Get Over It Day [yup, understand that one], and National Pancake Day.

After that rundown and perusal of the associated link, today might also be Learn Something New Every Day Day.

Anyway, IHOP, as one might not be surprised to learn, commemorates National Pancake Day from 7a.m.-10 p.m. when it offers customers a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes. Then again, there’s no such thing as a free breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Recipients of the free flapjacks are asked to donate a little cash in return for the cakes to benefit Shriners Hospitals.

Since the offer runs through tonight's dinner hour, it’s a little early to gauge today’s take. Last year, though, the national chain served 4 million pancakes during the fundraiser and generated more than $2.1 million for children’s charities, according to a press release.

That same release also said the free pancakes given during the 2010 National Pancake Day celebration would have reached a height of 31.5 miles if stacked vertically, which must be pretty interesting to a flapologist.
