City officials said Monday an electrical fire had shut down the City of Dallas Detention Center until further notice.
The fire, which occurred in an air-conditioning unit, sent smoke billowing through the building. The center is in the 1600 block of Chestnut in downtown Dallas.
The city said some prisoners were being moved to the Lew Sterrett Jail. Prisoners being held on suspicion of public intoxication were taken to the Austin Street Shelter, where they were released.
A Dallas spokesman said the damaged air-conditioning unit will have to be replaced.
