Field Trip Leads to Special Training at DISD

Dallas schools to get gender equality training

Officials from the U.S. Department of Education have reached an agreement with the Dallas Independent School District requiring that district employees receive gender equality training after an investigation into a boys-only field trip to see a movie.

The Dallas Morning News reports the school district agreed to the training last week as a step toward ensuring that no more educational programs exclude students based on gender.  The district spent $57,000 on the February field trip for the district's 5th-grade boys to see "Red Tails," about the legendary Tuskegee Airmen.

Many girls instead stayed in their schools and watched "Akeelah and the Bee," a fictional story about a girl who competes in a spelling bee.

Principals and officials in the school leadership department will undergo training.
