Father, Sister of Disabled Texan Get Prison Over Her Death

The father and older sister of a disabled woman have been sentenced to 20-year prison terms over her 2013 death blamed on neglect.

Mike Garvin and Tabby Martinak were sentenced Tuesday in Fort Worth. Both pleaded guilty in April to injury to the disabled in the death of 39-year-old Marci Garvin. She was born with cerebral palsy.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the woman died in March 2013 from sepsis, pneumonia, acute renal failure and severe dehydration. She was hospitalized after being found with bed sores and feces covering her body.

A judge determined Mike Garvin, who's a 71-year-old former Fort Worth police officer, and 47-year-old Martinak were responsible for not seeking help for their relative. Both will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years.
