Family Wants Answers in Missing Retired Firefighter's Disappearance

It's been nearly six months, and investigators aren't any closer to answers in the disappearance of Michael Chambers.

The 70-year-old retired Dallas firefighter went missing in Hunt County on March 10. He and his wife of 37 years would have celebrated their wedding anniversary on Thursday.

Chambers' family members refuse to give up hope.

"I don't understand how, how such a big guy could just disappear," said Chambers' granddaughter, Cristen Hanes.

It's a reality the family is having difficulty accepting. The questions they have about their missing grandfather they affectionately call "Papaw" are paralyzing.

"Not knowing what happened is the part that's just impossible to deal with," said Chambers' granddaughter, Nicole Hanes Kosanovich.

The circumstances of Chambers' disappearance were puzzling. Investigators found blood on the floor, and determined that his license, cell phone and cash from his wallet were missing.

Aggressive search patterns for Chambers in the days, weeks and even months after, turned up nothing.

"Until we find out what happened and find out the truth, I won't be thinking of him as anything but alive," said Hanes Kosanovich.

She believes someone took her grandfather and says with each passing day the outlook is grim.

She said the jolly, happy "Papaw" never missed a family gathering and was always engaged, but didn't call his own daughter on her birthday.

"I think for my mom that was probably one of those moments where it comes to the end of the day and there's been no call, and it's reality: he's not here," Hanes Kosanovich said.

But all hope isn't lost. The family says there is still an open investigation into his disappearance, and a family that clings to the memories and their faith that "Papaw" will eventually be found.

"None of this is something that's easy, but we will get through it and keep going until we have answers," said Hanes Kosanovich.

The family is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the whereabouts of Michael Chambers.
