Famed Two-Headed Turtle Dies at San Antonio Zoo

San Antonio Zoo officials say Thelma and Louise, a two-headed turtle that drew broad attention and had her own Facebook page, has died.

Officials said Tuesday in a release that Thelma and Louise was just over a year old.

They say the turtle, named for the female duo in the 1991 Oscar-winning movie, had been doing well but in recent months had stopped growing. The cause of death is not clear.

Thelma and Louise's two heads made her stand out, but officials say the trait is not uncommon for turtles and snakes.

A recent birthday included cards created by hundreds of children.

The zoo is no stranger to two-headed reptiles. The facility was home to a two-headed Texas rat snake named Janus from 1978 until the creature's death to 1995.
