Desk Exercises to Help Relieve Neck and Back Pain

Setting a reminder to stretch during the day and grabbing a tennis ball are the first steps

For those who spend a large chunk of the day sitting, pain or discomfort in areas like the neck, lower back and hips likely sounds familiar. But aside from causing discomfort, it can hinder someone's ability to carry out normal day-to-day movements, and in some cases contribute to more serious injuries, NBC News reported

Charlee Atkins, CSCS, a personal trainer and founder of the program Le Sweat, said taking stretch breaks during the day can help reduce the risks posed by being chained to a desk. She said setting a reminder to stretch is part of getting started.

Among her many tips are using a desk or chair for stability to help stretch by pulling one knee up to the chest as high as it will go while looking forward and taking five deep breaths before switching sides. She also recommended using a tennis ball underneath the right thigh while rocking the leg side to side before switching to the left side.

Simple neck, hip and shoulder stretches are another way to work some movement into the day, Atkins said.
