Ex-West Texas Official Gets Suspended Sentence For Theft

An ex-West Texas elected official has been sentenced to two years behind bars for theft but then the state jail time was suspended.

Former Socorro City Representative Jesus "Jesse" Gandara Jr. pleaded guilty to a 2013 charge of theft of property.

Gandara was sentenced June 11 in a case related to travel reimbursement. He must also pay restitution.

A judge in El Paso ordered the 34-year-old Gandara to serve that suspended sentence concurrent with another suspended penalty. Gandara last month was convicted of bribery and sentenced to 10 years in prison, the penalty was suspended, then he was fined $10,000 and put on probation.

Prosecutors say Gandara offered a $40,000 advertising campaign to some business owners if they backed a plan for Socorro to annex part of San Elizario.
