Elephant Calf Debuts at Dallas Zoo Wednesday

Elephant calf Ajabu and mom Mlilo made their public debut at the Dallas Zoo Wednesday morning.

The two made their first scheduled appearance in the lower elephant habitat just before 10 a.m. They will begin making regular appearances outside afterward.

Mlilo gave birth to the 175-pound male African elephant Ajabu May 14. He now weighs 332 pounds and stands nearly 4 feet tall.

After Ajabu's birth, Dallas Zoo officials allowed him to bond with his mother privately for several months while they "baby-proofed" the habitat.

Mlilo was one of the several elephants rescued from Swaziland this past spring.
