El Paso police say a patient has died after he jumped out of a moving ambulance and fell onto Interstate 10.
Police said the 24-year-old man was under an emergency detention order when he was being transported Monday.
Investigators didn't immediately say how fast the ambulance was going when the man, who was on a gurney, unbuckled his restraints and jumped.
He was pronounced dead at University Medical Center of El Paso.
Officials said the man was being transported from one medical facility to another when he jumped from the rig.
Rachel Harracksingh, with Life Ambulance Service, said the vehicle had a driver in the front and an emergency medical technician in the back.
Part of westbound I-10 was closed for several hours following Monday morning's incident.
