El Paso Officer Charged With DWI in Fatal Crash

An off-duty El Paso police officer has been charged with DWI in a fatal crash north of Austin early Tuesday morning.

Authorities said 26-year-old officer Alan Eduardo Dieguez was driving faster than 100 mph on Interstate 35 near Jarrell at about 2:15 a.m. when he rear-ended a semitrailer.

The driver of that semitrailer pulled over to check on the man. A second semitrailer hit debris from the crash and skidded off the roadway, killing the unidentified driver of the first semitrailer. A third semitrailer also hit debris and caught fire.

Three people with injuries were taken to a Round Rock hospital.

Police officials said Dieguez wasn't on duty at the time of the crash. He was booked into the Williamson County Jail on the driving while intoxicated charge and unlawfully carrying a weapon, then freed on bond later Tuesday.

Officials said he'll be placed on administrative leave.
