Garland police say they have arrested a man they believe hit a 29-year-old man, got out of his car to look at him and left the scene Wednesday afternoon. The male victim who was hit is currently in critical condition, police said.
Officers found the victim, who was identified as Travis Deon Paul Gray of Corinth, lying on the street suffering from a head injury at 12:45 p.m. in the 4300 block of Action Street, police said. [[509696501,C]]
The latest news from around North Texas.
Investigators said Thursday night that they arrested 35-year-old Miguel Angel Castro of Dallas.
A tip given to police on Thursday led investigators to the 2006 Toyota Sienna, which then led officers to identify the driver.
Castro is currently in the Garland Jail. He faces several charges including Failing to stop and render aid - serious bodily injury and possession of methamphetamine. Officers also discovered a felony warrant for his arrest out of Dallas County for bond forfeiture/possession of a controlled substance.
So far a bond amount has not been set.
Surveillance video showed the driver, believed to be Castro, hit Gray in a dark blue minivan. It appears Gray was on a ladder in the roadway attempting to tie down a vehicle to a trailer, police said.
Gray's fiance, Angelica Nathan, who is five months pregnant with the couple's third child, has seen the video. It's difficult for her to process how Castro could just drive away.
"It's devastating to see that," she said. "It's selfish. He should have never done that. He should have at least called the police."
Video shows the minivan striking Gray who was on the ladder. The driver stops, exits the minivan, approaches the man on the ground, returns to his vehicle and drives away. [[509697782,C]]
It was a stranger and his friend driving by that saw Gray bleeding in the middle of the street and called 911.
"When we rolled by my friend slowed down to go around him, I looked down and saw blood and was like I'm calling 911," said Patrick Redburn.
Gray's family said he has suffered a serious head injury.
"It's one of those times where you don't know what is going on. You hope he okay but I just don't know," said Nathan.
