DPS Hopes To Recruit 300

Department rolls out mobile billboards

While other law enforcement agencies are cutting back, The Texas Department of Public Safety is looking to fill over 300 positions.

"We want to thank the Texas Legislature for the additional positions and for authorizing a pay increase, which will help our recruiting efforts," DPS Director Steve McCraw said.

That effort will include sending DPS recruiters across the state in seven flashy new Tahoes wrapped with a giant graphic ad.

While the next recruit class starts in September, the department won't be pressured to fill all the slots with just anybody, McCraw said.

"Quality not quantity is our goal," he stressed.

McCraw told KRLD.com that the department is targeting laid-off law officers and former military members.

“We can clearly benefit from their expertise, their energy and their dedication,” he said.

Applicants must be also be at least 20 years old, have completed 90 hours of college credit or an associate's degree and be a U.S. citizen.  (Law enforcement or military experience may be used toward fulfilling the college requirement.)
