Doctors Remove Claw Hammer After Southeast Texas Attack

Authorities say Houston surgeons removed a hammer from a woman's head after she was attacked in Southeast Texas.

The Houston Chronicle reports that sheriff's deputies in Chambers County found 29-year-old Lee Ann Bridges on Sunday afternoon after being sent to investigate an assault in the community of Stowell, located about 60 miles east of Houston.

Chambers County sheriff's officials said Bridges had been attacked with a claw hammer wielded by 24-year-old Clifford Johnnie Sonnier, who has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault. He remained in jail Monday on $300,000 bond. Jail records don't list an attorney for him.

Authorities said Bridges was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she underwent surgery to remove the claw hammer from her frontal lobe.

Sheriff's officials haven't released information on a motive.
