Deweyville Superintendent Estimates $12 Million in Flood Damage

The head of a Southeast Texas school district where flooding swamped an elementary campus with water 5-foot deep estimates $12 million in losses and little insurance.

The superintendent of the Deweyville Independent School District said Wednesday that efforts continue to resume classes April 11. Kevin Clark says the  district's more than 600 students will be at the undamaged junior-senior high school.

Early-March rainstorms and releases from the Toledo Bend Reservoir flooded the Sabine (suh-BEEN') River and much of Deweyville, 100 miles northeast of Houston. Clark says insurance adjustors say the district did not have flood coverage.

Clark expects graduation May 27 as originally planned.

He hopes for a Texas Education Agency waiver that could help trim the 15 flood-related missed school days to five, to be achieved with longer school days.
