Denton County Fallen Soldiers Memorial Gets Permanent Home

A once traveling memorial to Denton County's fallen service members now has a place to call home.

On Tuesday morning, memorial creator Monty Slough, of Oak Point, turned the Fallen Soldiers Memorial over to the county's care during a meeting of the Denton County Commissioners.

The Vietnam veteran teared up as he told commissioners that the monument was finally home.

Slough began creating the monument in 2007 to show the names, faces and stories of the service members from the county that died in Desert Storm, Desert Shield, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Each of the 23 men who died either in combat or due to the long-standing effects of combat is memorialized with a plaque on the wall.

Slough said it's bittersweet to turn the memorial over, but he's glad that it can now stand for everyone to remember the county's heroes.

The memorial is displayed on the third floor of the Denton County Courthouse on the Square.
