December Expected to Smash Auto Sales Records

Auto sales in the United States are on the verge of breaking the industry's single-year record by more than 100,000 vehicles, according to a forecast issued Friday by LMC Automotive.

In fact, December sales are expected to be higher than any month in the last 10 years.

James Seale, the general manager at Southwest Kia in Mesquite, said local sales are strong, too.

"My business is up 17 percent year-over-year," he said. "We are forecasting to have a 25-percent increase next year. It's just tremendous growth right now."

Seale cites consumer confidence as one of the primary reasons for the strong sales.

"The biggest increase in our numbers is our Internet business," he said. "We thought several years ago that the Internet would be the demise of the car industry and would change it totally, but it's actually made it better."

LMC projects December sales of 1.71 million cars and light trucks, which is 14 percent more than a year ago. That would bring the total sales for 2015 to 17,542,165 vehicles – a 6.1 percent-increase from 2014.

The current record is 17,402,486 vehicles sold in 2000.
