Deadly Head-on Crash Shuts Down Interstate 45 in Freestone County

Three people have died and several others were injured after a head-on crash Monday morning on Interstate 45 in Freestone County, authorities say.

A Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling the wrong direction in the southbound lanes of I-45 just south of Corsicana when it struck a Nissan Pathfinder SUV, killing both adult drivers, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The driver of the pickup was identified as James Edward Warren, 78, of Richland.

A 14-year-old passenger was later pronounced dead after he was transported to Children's Medical Center of Dallas.

Five other children and an adult passenger injured in the crash have also been transported to Dallas hospitals, where their conditions have not been released.

DPS said the preliminary investigation indicates none of the children were buckled in seatbelts. There was a child safety seat found in the vehicle.

Two additional vehicles were also involved in the collision, and the people from those vehicles were transported to East Texas Medical Center Fairfield with non-life threatening injuries.

All lanes of I-45 reopened after being closed for several hours.
