DAS Completes Investigation Into Rescued Dogs' Euthanasia

Dallas Animal Services says it has completed its investigation into the accidental euthanasia of four rescued dogs on New Year's Day.

The four Aussie mixes were going to end up in foster homes, after a total of 27 were rescued from a possible hoarding situation, but two days later they were put down by mistake.

Shelter officials had said the euthanasia was not done on purpose, but proper protocols were not followed.

The city said Thursday that it found that "two employees should have exercised more prudence in the documentation and record verification process."

As a result, one employee was suspended and another was terminated based on "cumulative performance history." Those employees names were not released.

In the past, shelter leaders said they will take steps to prevent this from happening again, including a review of standard operating procedures, how to add safeguards in computer software, training and improved communication.

NBC 5's Chris Van Horne contributed to this report.
