DART Celebrates 20 Years of Light-Rail

The largest municipal rail system in Texas has turned 20 years old.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit on Tuesday marked the light-rail anniversary with customer appreciation events at several stations.

DART rail service began on June 14, 1996, with an 11-mile network of Red and Blue lines. DART rail now includes 62 stations in eight cities, with rail spanning 90 miles.

Transit officials said the system has carried out more than 360 million passenger trips.

DART officials in February announced plans to install security cameras on the light-rail trains. All DART buses currently have cameras, and train stations and some bus centers are also equipped with cameras.

DART serves Dallas and a dozen other North Texas cities.
