Dallas Zoo Ownership Turns Private

Dallas officials are turning the operation of the city's zoo over to a private society.

City Council members voted unanimously to turn management of the Dallas Zoo, its animals and its employees over to the Dallas Zoological Society on Oct. 1.

Officials say that could save the city $1.5 million this year and tens of millions in each of coming years.

Supporters of the plan say privatization will open the door for increased donations to the Dallas attraction. But some council members voiced concern over the speed with which the city advanced the plan.

They're seeking information about continued oversight of the zoo and the public's access to zoo records.
