Dallas Students Head to Inauguration

14 students heading to Washington, D.C.

Fourteen Dallas International School students will attend Inauguration Day in Washington, D.C., as part of a special field trip.

Eighth-graders who spent Wednesday examining Neoclassical art will see artwork from the period first-hand in just a few days.

"We decided to let the students understand the [difference] between what is happening in France during a certain time period and what's happening in the U.S. during the same time period," teacher Lorraine Gachelin said.

The students will attend the second inauguration of President Barack Obama, as well as one of the inaugural balls.

"I've been excited since I heard about the trip," student Layala Babahaji said.

Five of the students are American. One is Belgian, one is of Iranian-Moroccan descendent, and seven are French.

Elodie Gungerman's family recently became U.S. citizens, casting their first American ballot this past November.

"It's the first one for my parent to vote, and it's just really exciting and amazing," Gungerman said.

Now Gungerman has a chance to observe the end result of democracy in action.

"It will also create a strong bond between these kids that they will be able to share these experiences and then those experience will become more important in their lives" Gachelin said.

The students leave for Washington, D.C., early Saturday morning.
