Dallas Promotes Legal Graffiti

The City of Dallas wants local graffiti artists to showcase their art in a legal way.

A special event will be held March 21in Victory Park to showcase the works of art made by local graffiti artists who pledge not to create unlawful artworks.

John Barr, who was appointed by Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings to help reduce unlawful graffiti, said he hopes the event will lead to new success for artists.

"To participate, all artists sign a written pledge to cease unlawful graffiti, and in turn, we will help promote those with artistic promise," said John Barr. "The City of Dallas will hopefully set a new pathway to success for these artists."

It's not the first time the city has encouraged taggers to do legal public artworks -- last year, the city allowed artists to paint pillars under the Commerce Street Bridge during the Trinity River Wind Festival.

The event begins at 5 p.m. in front of the American Airlines Center.
