A man who opened fire on Dallas Police Wednesday morning died in a shootout with police officers, the department says.

Dallas Police said officers were called at about 5:35 a.m. to reports of an armed person along the 10300 block of Shiloh Road near Ruth Ann Drive in the Casa View neighborhood.

Three officers arrived a short time later and reported seeing a man, identified by police as 64-year-old Darrell Hibbard, armed with a handgun.

In a statement that accompanied the release of a bodycam video on Thursday, police said Hibbard walked toward officer Brandy Walling's patrol car as she repeatedly ordered him to put down his gun. Police said Walling gave at least 30 verbal commands before Hibbard pointed his gun in her direction.

It was then that Hibbard and police exchanged gunfire. Police said he was struck several times in the shooting and that afterward officers attempted to provide him with medical assistance. Hibbard was later taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:10 a.m.

No officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire, the department said.
