Dallas Plastic Bag Fee Gone, Many Customers Happy

Monday was the first day customers did not have to pay a $0.05 plastic bag fee after the Dallas City Council voted to repeal the fee that started Jan. 1.

Edward Lara, an employee at Family Dollar in Oak Cliff, said customers are pretty excited the fee is gone.

“They don’t have to waste $0.05,” said Lara, “Which $0.05 cents can do a lot, especially for the customers.”

Lara said, personally, he thought the fee was good and could see a change.

“It was actually really good for the environment, because people weren’t purchasing bags,” he said. “You could see a huge difference.”

The news of the fee going away spread fast at the 7 Mart Food Store in Oak Cliff.

“The customers were happy,” 7 Mart employee Prince Will said.

Will said he is glad the fee is no more.

“It is going to help the business a lot, because sometimes customers, when we told them to pay five cents for plastic bags, they would walk away,” he said.

Austin and nine other Texas cities still enforce a plastic bag fee.
