The Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees approved Dr. Michael Hinojosa as superintendent of the district in a 6 to 1 vote Tuesday night.
The board went into closed session before returning to take action on his contract.
Hinojosa, who previously served as Dallas ISD superintendent from 2005 to 2011, signed his contract immediately after the vote.
One board member voted no because the board did not conduct a more extensive search.
The two-year contract expires in December 2017 and includes a base salary of $335,000 per year.
Hinojosa will give up certain benefits, including health insurance along with allowances for a car and phone. But he will keep his $200,000 pension from before.

"Well, that's my earned benefit. That's something that people have their own personal income. It's not related to the job, the skill, effort and responsibility for this position," Hinojosa said. "It's totally separate. And it's something that an old guy has earned over a long period of time."
"We have teachers in Dallas that have retired that are receiving their pension as well as their current salary ... so I think that he has earned that pension," said David Lee, with the Dallas teachers' union. "And just like teachers or other education employees, that if they've earned the pension then they should receive it."
Hinojosa had served as interim superintendent since June when Mike Miles unexpectedly resigned. In September, the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees voted 8 to 1 to name Hinojosa as the lone finalist for the position.
Hinojosa doesn't expect any major changes but says he wants to tweak some things that haven't been working well. Details on those adjustments were not discussed Tuesday.
"There aren't going to be significant changes. It's now time to implement," Hinojosa said. "Right now there is not going to be any change of direction in the organization at this point.
