Crunch Time for Last-Minute Christmas Shoppers

Every year it seems many people wait until last minute to do their Christmas shopping and this year is no different.

Malls and stores were packed Wednesday as people enjoyed the unseasonably warm temperatures to cross items off their gift lists just two days before Christmas.

In spite of long check-out lines, many shoppers said it's easy to brave the madness this year.

โ€œIt just seems nicer this year,โ€ said one couple. โ€œUsually everyone is pushing and shoving.โ€

The family hasn't had a whole lot of time for shopping early.

โ€œWe just had a little girl 13 days ago,โ€ they said.

Customers who wait until the last minute mean big business for retailers.

โ€œSome stores have extra specials that they're doing at the last minute to kind of help get those last-minute shoppers in their stores,โ€ said Holly Connor, director of marketing and business development for North East Mall.

At local grocery stores people are filling their pantries with ingredients for their holiday feast.

"We also have more help that we bring on to make sure our customers have a great shopping experience," said Gary Huddleston, with Kroger.

It seems the warm weather this year has also added to the pleasant shopping experience.

"I'm just going to take it easy and say, 'Merry Christmas' to everybody," Linda Gatlin.

North East Mall and area Kroger stores will be open on Christmas Eve.

They will take a break by closing Christmas Day and reopen on Saturday.
