Allow me to introduce you to possibly the best kept secret in the Rangers farm system.
Frisco centerfielder Ryan Cordell is a Rangers prospect that’s flying under the radar this season, but he’s playing well enough to possibly warrant a September call-up to the big league roster.
Cordell is hitting a respectable .279 for the Roughriders, but the power and production is what’s impressive. He’s gone for 15 home runs and 53 RBIs in 77 games, leading the team in both categories.
However, it was in the Texas League All-Star Game last week where Cordell took center stage. The Rangers 14th-ranked prospect went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs to earn MVP honors. What was most impressive about that homer was how the right-handed slugger took the outside fastball and drove it opposite field.
Cordell was an 11th round selection in the 2013 MLB Draft out of Liberty University. He not only has power, but adds speed to the mix. Cordell’s seven stolen bases ranks second on the team to Lewis Brinson’s eight. He’s also shown versatility moving up through the system, and has spent some time in the big league camp in the past.
