Coppell Break-ins Could be Tied to Notorious Group

Coppell police believe a recent rash of car break-ins could be the work of the so-called Felony Lane Gang.

The organized gang of thieves is known for cashing victims' checks in the far outside teller lane at various banks. Police say the perpetrators sometimes even dress up as the victim.

In the last six months, the Coppell Police Department has seen 18 break-ins. Some have been outside day cares, and, most recently, parks have been the new target. The break-ins have involved smash-and-grabs and also some unlocked cars.

Laura Shanks was the victim of a smash-and-grab just this week. She was at a dog park in the city in the middle of the day and was even parked in the front row within eyesight.

"The thing I don't understand is how none of us noticed, saw it. It must have been really fast. They must have been pretty quiet about doing it," she said.

The burglary took minutes and seconds, but the inconvenience for Shanks is lasting hours and days.

"All week it's been going to the bank and asking them to ask for additional forms of identification," she explained. "I sat for an hour-and-a-half waiting to get a new drivers license, getting the window [replaced] before the cold front came through."

Coppell police are working with other agencies to figure out if the Felony Lane Gang is responsible.

"These burglars are professionals. They're quick. Within seconds they're inside your vehicle and your stuff is gone," said Ofc. Sam Lujan.

Now, as holidays approach, Lujan thinks the amount of break-ins could increase.

"It could rise. People are going out buying gifts and leaving then in their cars," he said.
