Convicted Killer of Dallas Girl, 11, Gets 2017 Death Date

A Dallas man on death row for the 2005 slaying of an 11-year-old girl who was repeatedly sexually assaulted and strangled has received a June 28 execution date.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark says the prison agency has received notice that a state judge in Dallas has set 45-year-old Steven Lynn Long for lethal injection.

A federal appeals court two weeks ago rejected an appeal from Long. He was convicted of the death of Kaitlyn Briana Smith, who was reported missing May 20, 2005, after spending the night at a friend's house.

The girl's grandfather found her body hidden in a trash bag under a trailer home in her neighborhood.

At least seven Texas condemned inmates have execution dates, one next month and the others in 2017.
