Concrete Debris Falls From Overpass Along I-20 in South Dallas

Road repairs expected to take five hours

Concrete falling from a highway overpass temporarily closed all westbound lanes of Interstate 20 in Southern Dallas County Wednesday afternoon.

Debris falling from the Houston School Road overpass was first reported just before 3 p.m.

Initially all lanes of westbound traffic were closed as a precaution, but shortly before 3:30 p.m., officials began to allow two of the four lanes to pass while crews work to repair the damage.

Houston School Road, under the overpass, remained partially open during the repair.

Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation said the damage was caused by pavement failure. At 8 p.m. TxDOT reported the road had reopened.

Donna Huerta with TxDOT said while some of the repairs were done, two lanes of westbound I-20 would be closed again from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday. The road will open for traffic on Friday and through the weekend.

On Monday, TxDOT will close the road again from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and if crews can not complete the work Monday they'll work as long as needed Tuesday according to Huerta.

Huerta said TxDOT would not speculate on the cause of the damage and that bridge inspectors would look into the cause.
