Concerns Raised Over Access to Public Beaches in Galveston

City officials are pushing for clear signage indicating public access to some beaches in Galveston despite resident complaints about unmanageable crowds of tourists.

The Galveston County Daily News reports that city planning commission chairwoman, Carol Hollaway, says residents have removed signs and threatened to tow vehicles in an effort to discourage tourists from visiting the West End beaches.

Cities along the Texas coast are lawfully required to maintain a public access point at least every half mile along beaches. Many of Galveston's 41 access points are on the West End.

West Galveston Island Property Owners Association vice president Peggy Zahler says the subdivision was never designed to deal with large crowds. Zahler added that the increased number of tourists has made it difficult to manage crowds, particularly on holiday weekends.
