City Leaders Hear Plan to Revitalize Downtown Plano

Plano City Council members will hear a plan to revitalize neighborhoods near downtown on Monday night.

The focus area of the plan extends across the two-and-a-half mile DART Red Line corridor in neighborhoods within a half-mile radius.

The area is home to five of Plano's most mature neighborhoods, including Douglass, Haggard Park, Old Towne and Vendome. According to the city, at least 50 percent of the households living within those neighborhoods have an annual income at or below Plano's median income and are eligible to receive assistance offered through the use of HUD funds.

In five years, Plano will look to preserve neighborhoods through rehabilitation and new construction of mixed-income housing types. The city will also create pedestrian-friendly streets, establish mixed-housing options, public services and facilities, office, restaurant, retail and household goods stores.

Older apartment complexes could require major rehabilitation or demolition, the city said.

The estimated cost of the project is $68 million.
