Church leaders in downtown Irving fear a museum that is set to open across the street from their church will threaten the safety of its parishioners.
This week, the city council voted to change the zoning for the new property, allowing alcohol sales at the Texas Musicians Museum on Delaware Street and Irving Boulevard.
Paul Arredondo of Springs of Life Church said he’s already worried about parking if the museum moves in.
But, he said he’s more concerned about the museum serving alcohol, especially when there are many church children around on the weekends.
"Patrons, they’re a little tipsy, after might want to come and just be rambunctious," he said. "We just don’t want them to see that type of environment, and to be close to that environment as well."
City Councilmember Gerald Farris said he understands their concerns and ensured that firm regulations will always be in place by both the city and TABC.
Farris also said he hopes residents understand that bringing a venue like the museum will be a historic move.
"This may be one of the most significant changes or developments in downtown Irving in a very long time," he said.
Arredondo said he’s disappointed, but will respect the city’s decision. He hoped the museum officials will stand by their word to not hold any events on Sunday.
