Ceremony in Wildfire-Ravaged Bastrop for Arbor Day

Members of a Central Texas community still recovering from 2011 wildfires that claimed two lives and thousands of trees will come together on Arbor Day.

Ceremonies are planned Friday morning in Bastrop, about 30 miles east of Austin.

Experts have said the deadly wildfires claimed 95 percent of the trees in Bastrop State Park while destroying nearly 1,700 homes. Two people were killed in Bastrop County.

Texas A&M Forest Service officials will be part of the Arbor Day ceremony at the Bastrop Convention & Exhibit Center. An education fair will follow. Bastrop will also receive a Tree City USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation.
