Prosecutors say a Central Texas woman faces up to life in prison for the 1999 slaying of her husband to prevent him from discovering she charged $8,000 to his credit card.
Margaret Litchfield was convicted Friday of murder in the fatal shooting of 49-year-old Raymond Litchfield at their home near Copperas Cove. The penalty phase begins next month in Gatesville.
Coryell County District Attorney Dusty Boyd says the now-60-year-old Litchfield was the primary suspect in the January 1999 killing. She was indicted in 2015 after the victim's relatives urged prosecutors to reconsider the case.
Boyd says Litchfield charged about $8,000 to her husband's credit card, didn't tell him and the card was denied when he tried to buy a boat. Boyd says Litchfield shot her spouse to avoid a confrontation.
