A large brush fire threatened homes in Hunt County east of Royse City near County Road 2597 Friday late afternoon.
Firefighters attacked the fast-moving fire with air strikes and brush trucks and quickly got it under control.
Richard Hill, Hunt County fire marshal, estimated that more than 150 acres were burned in the blaze, which was 90 percent contained Friday night.
"This was a very fast-moving fire, wild-land fire, grass fire," he said.
The fire south of Interstate 30 near the Rockwall County/Hunt County line started just before 5 p.m.
Chopper 5 showed a large plume of black smoke, and flames coming dangerously close to several homes.
Hill said windy dry conditions and items that were illegally dumped on ranch land helped fuel the fire.

"Anything added to the natural fuel just makes the conditions much worse," he said.
Hill said the wildfire risk would dramatically decrease if people adhered to burn bans.
"It takes so little to start a huge grass fire," he said.
Firefighters evacuated eight mobile homes and turned animals loose from their pastures, Hill said. Four small buildings were destroyed but no homes were damaged or destroyed.
Fire crews will be in place overnight in case the fire rekindles.
