Just wanted to pass on this story about one of our Class of 2021 grads, Lucas Vreeland. Here’s Lucas’ story: One hundred and four GPISD students will graduate from high school on May 29 and then from Mountain View College with an associate degree on June 26. While earning an associate degree and a high school diploma within the same month is quite an accomplishment, for Lucas Vreeland, it is even more impressive.
Lucas was working out with his South Grand Prairie Swim Team his freshman year when a slip and fall resulted in a two-week hospital stay, four days of which were in the ICU. Suffering a fractured skill that resulted in a traumatic brain injury threatened to derail Lucas’ dreams. The first few months, he could not read because of light sensitivity. Now Lucas has been able to find ways to make accommodations for his lingering side-effects like blue blocker glasses and adjusting the light in his work-space.
Lucas recently had a set-back when he had a seizure on April 12, 2021 that affected his right side. He has had to accept that some things just take him longer, but that does not deter him from setting big goals for himself. Goals like graduating with 41 college credit hours and being accepted to multiple universities. Next year, Lucas will attend Wichita State in Kansas where he will major in digital arts working toward another dream of a career in game design and animation.
With all the hurdles he has had to overcome, Lucas continued to be a competitive swimmer and carry a full high school and college load. He credits all his teachers with providing him with encouragement, especially SGP ECHS Dean Donna Wallace. Lucas said that Mrs. Wallace ensured his Mountain View instructors understood his accommodations and checked on him often. Students like Lucas Vreeland are a testament to the resiliency of the spirit and the drive that having a goal can instill.
My beautiful five year old daughter Presley Riggs graduated Lena Pope Pre K and is headed to Kindergarten. Her Daddy is so proud of her.
