The cheesecake is not real.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas put out a warning Tuesday night about a man who has been going door-to-door soliciting funds for a cheesecake fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club location in Richardson.
The man, who calls himself “Coach Thomas,” shows up complete with pamphlets for the organization’s programs as well as a cheesecake order form — $12 a piece or two for $20, according to an executive with the organization.
“It is very concerning that someone would go out and take advantage of people who, in the end, want to help the organization,” said Regina Morris, vice president of resource development and marketing for the Boys & Girls Clubs.
The organization learned of the scheme when a victim called them Tuesday to say that they are a business owner in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas, that they had paid “Coach Thomas” $20 for cheesecake that never came and that they suspected they had been duped.
“We want to thank her for reaching out to us and we want to let the greater community know that if they come across something like this again, or for the first time, to please not hesitate to call us directly,” Morris said.
