Man Dies During Mud Run Competition

Tarrant County medical examiner to determine man's cause of death

The body of a 30-year-old man was pulled from the Trinity River on Sunday morning, hours after he competed in a mud run in Fort Worth.

Officials began searching for Tony Weathers on Saturday night after he was reported missing. Divers recovered his body near Northeast 23rd Street and Samuels Avenue, along the race route.

Weathers, a participant in the "Original Mud Run," was known as "Weatherman" to his trainer and classmates at his boot camp class at the Cimmarron Park Recreation Center.

Lynetta Moore helped him train for races for the last two years.

"He was physically ready for this race," she said. "Physically, [there was] nothing wrong with him. Something else had to happen."

Moore said Weathers had competed in other races, including long-distance relays.

But 15 minutes into the race, Weathers was nowhere to be found. Friends saw him go into the Trinity River but never saw him come out.

"By 5 o'clock, I hadn't heard from him, and I texted him, said, 'Hey how'd you do?' and she said, 'Hey this Lauren, his girlfriend. Tony's missing,'" Moore said.

The event was held at LaGrave Field. According to the Fort Worth Fire Department, the course ran along the banks of the Trinity. Part of the course also involved participants swimming across the river.

Friends and family members said they are devastated and wonder what could have gone wrong.

"I'm feeling those emotions, and I'm just his trainer," Moore said.

Fort Worth police said they do not suspect foul play. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday but the medical examiner has not yet ruled on a cause of death.
