Dallas police said a man found shot at a gas station near Dallas Love Field Wednesday night was wounded trying to rob a nearby apartment.

Saeid Ardestani, 56, was found after 7 p.m. at a Valero gas station near the intersection of Webb Chapel Road and Larga Drive, north of the airport, according to authoritieis.

Police said surveillance video showed an unidentified man and woman transporting Ardestani to the the gas station, calling 911 and then leaving. A witness told NBC 5 that Ardestani was clutching his chest and throat area as he slumped to the ground.

Ardestani was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Several minutes later, 74-year-old Thomas Lopez called 911 and reported that he shot one of two men who entered his home and tried to rob him on the 9700 block of Dale Crest Drive.

Because of the proximity of the two incidents and the description Lopez gave of the men, police said they thought the two offenses might be related. Lopez agreed to be taken to the police station for an interview.

Lopez told police that the two men came to his door asking for change. He said one the men then went into the home at the Spanish Pueblo Apartments and demanded money, threatening to shoot him. Police said Lopez told them he then pulled a handgun from his waistband and shot the man.

Both men ran away after the shooting, according to police. Lopez said he tried calling 911

Police said they showed Lopez a photo lineup and he positively identified Ardestani as the man he shot in his apartment.

Lopez was released, though the case will be presented to the grand jury.
