Big Tex Urban Farms is growing the State Fair of Texas tradition.
The mobile farm grows produces thoursands of fruits and vegetables and more than 20,000 greens on the concrete parking lot at Fair Park.
The farm started with 100 garden boxes in 2016, and this year has expanded to 520 garden boxes. The newest venture is inside of the Fair Park Greenhouse where lettuce, Swiss chard and basil are growing in a hydroponic raised garden box.
The goal behind the "farm on concrete" is to provide fresh healthy produce for residents living in neighboring food desert communities. Everything that is grown from the farm is given away to churches that feed the homeless and non-profit organizations.
