Friends of a McKinney police officer killed in an off-duty motorcycle accident are rallying to raise money for his wife and two children.
Sicily's Pizza and Pasta in McKinney opened on a Monday for the second time in 22 years for a fundraiser for Officer John Libby's family. The family-owned restaurant donated 100 percent of the proceeds from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. to benefit the Libby family.
"This is amazing," said Jennifer Libby, the officer's wife. "It's my Texas family, I call it. We don't have any blood relatives here."
The latest news from around North Texas.
The Libbys relocated to Collin County from their native New Jersey six years ago.
Jennifer Libby said her son and daughter will remember their father in part for his dedication to service.
"He left a legacy, he left a legacy for our children," she said.
Other friends and fellow officers also reflected on their memories of Libby.
"Seeing the impact of what losing John has had on his family -- John was a very well-liked guy," said Shane LeClair, a friend who sold T-shirts and bracelets at the benefit to raise money for the family.
Organizers said their goal was to raise $35,000 in 24 hours for the family.
