It’s been another offseason full of misses for the Mavericks when talking about the NBA free agent market, something that’s starting to become an annual event.
Now there is word that Dallas will present an offer sheet for a four-year, $95-million contract to Golden State forward Harrison Barnes. The Warriors would have three days to match any offer sheet Barnes signs.
But don’t be surprised if the Mavericks get left behind once again.
It was a shot in the dark for Dallas, knowing the chances of getting Barnes was small since the Warriors said they’ll match any offer unless they win the current Kevin Durant sweepstakes.
If he does come to Dallas, Barnes would take Chandler Parson’s place on the roster after Parsons accepted a max contract with Memphis. Barnes, the seventh overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, has a career average of 10.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
But the bigger question is why has this become a trend for the Mavericks?
After winning the NBA championship in 2011, the Mavericks have gone all in on various free agents, only to be left at the alter every time. Is there something about playing for Dallas and owner Mark Cuban that isn’t appealing to free agents?

Is there another reason the Mavericks can’t close the deal? Memphis guard Mike Conley and Miami center Hassan Whiteside were high on the priority list, but accepted max contracts to stay home. Those are the multi-million dollar questions that Mavericks fans would love an answer to.
The way things are shaping up right now, it looks like another offseason of Plan B or Plan C for the Mavericks.
