State troopers fired on an 18-wheeler that drove through a South Texas Border Patrol checkpoint to bring the rig to a stop following a chase covering more than 160 miles.
Authorities said the chase began early Thursday when the driver of the rig failed to stop at the checkpoint in Freer, northeast of Laredo.
The pursuit drew troopers, Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement personnel as it moved north. Officials said the driver attempted to strike pursuing vehicles on several occasions.
Shots were fired into the wheels of the rig to finally bring it to a stop in Kyle, northeast of San Antonio. Nine people were found in the trailer and they were taken into custody by Border Patrol.
The unidentified driver of the rig was arrested.
